Obituary

Hicks, Frances Elizabeth (Betty)

Betty was born in Calgary on April 19, 1926; she was the oldest of 3 children born to Helen and Lee Merritt.
The family lived on a farm at Indus where they grew a huge garden and raised chickens. The children attended a country school in Indus where they rode a horse to and from school. Betty grew up in the dusty depression of the thirties. Hobos from the train used to come to their door looking for work in exchange for food. No matter how little they had, they always managed to feed them. Betty even had an egg route in Calgary to make extra money.
In 1946 she married Bob Evans and moved to the farm in Caroline, Alberta. Here they had their seven children. Bob passed away in February of 1983.
Betty then met Tom Hicks. They lived a very nomadic life living from British Columbia to Manitoba. Her very favorite place was the Okanogan, where they picked fruit for years. Tom passed away in October of 2004. Betty then moved into Columbus Place.
Betty was predeceased by her parents Helen and Lee, her brother Peter, her sister Charlotte Mannerfeldt and her beloved son David Evans.
Betty is survived by her children: Lee (Chris), Lyn (Gene), Judy, Earl (Yvonne), John and Anne,daughter-in-law Wendy and numerous grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Chapel of the Rocky Funeral Home on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at 2:00 PM. Cremation has been entrusted to the Rocky Mountain Crematorium.
Memorial donations in Betty’s name may be made to the Rocky Mountain House Palliative Care Unit at the Rocky Mountain House Health Care Centre.

Condolences

Warner and Hazel Rauch:
Have known Betty for years, she was always cheerful, raised some wonderful children that we're friends with.. We are sending our sincere sympathy to all her children and their families.
Lorraine Stephenson:
I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of this wonderful astute woman. I had the privilege of cleaning for her through West Country for 5 years and she always made me feel appreciated. We continued our friendship, and kept in touch. I'm so pleased that I got in a nice visit with her just before Christmas. Rest in peace, my dear friend.
Lee Anne Fandrick:
I am so sorry for your loss. I only got to know Betty a few years ago because of my work.
She always made me feel important and loved.
