Elizabeth Vanessa Ingrid Berjat
March 11, 1980 – April 2, 2018
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we are sharing the tragic news of the unexpected passing of Vanessa Berjat.
Vanessa was the only child born to Michel Berjat and Bozena Maria Wroblewska- Berjat. Montreal was home for most of her early years.
She had the privilege to engage in a 1 year exchange program in London. Her interests led her to study Literature in Paris in her early university years. Upon returning to Canada, Vanessa continued her education in Journalism at Concordia University. Realizing her calling for Medicine, she then attended McGill University.
Vanessa graduated in 2007 and went on to specialize in Family Medicine with a keen focus in Obstetrical Care. She wanted to explore this great country and worked in several communities throughout Western Canada. Attuned to the challenges of rural communities’ access to care, she completed the Enhanced Surgical Skills Program in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.
Thereafter, Vanessa and her life partner, Eric de Larminat, explored communities and rural medicine career opportunities in Western Canada before settling in Rocky Mountain House. Vanessa’s passion for women’s health issues was amazing and her calm presence in the obstetrical suite made every birth a holy event.
Her life commitment was larger than her local community. She was a strong advocate for the Enhanced Surgical Skills Program. She played a very active role in furthering the advancement of its curriculum, participating and building ongoing mentorship programs with surgeons through the Rural Surgical Network in BC.
Vanessa’s other professional pursuits included mission work in Panama, her support for Doctors Without Borders and The Red Cross, and her keen interest in studying surgical outcomes in developing countries.
Vanessa is survived by the love of her life, Eric, her parents Michel and Bozena, her extended family in both North America and Europe, Eric's family and many close friends.
Vanessa, you were deeply loved and you will always be loved, you will never be forgotten and you will always be in our hearts.
A funeral service for Vanessa will be held at the Rocky Mountain Alliance Church, 5304 57th Street on April 9th, 2018 at 2:00 PM. Cremation entrusted to the Rocky Mountain Crematorium, Rocky Mountain House.
Donations may be made in Vanessa’s name to the Rocky Mountain House Hospital and Care Centre to help support the surgical and obstetrics programs.
Rocky and Sylvan Lake Funeral Homes and Crematorium, your Golden Rule Funeral Homes, entrusted with the arrangements.

Amy and Sacha Bordas:
Our heartfelt condolences to Vanessa's family. Her loss is deeply felt because she was such a vivacious woman. Rest in peace Vanessa.
I struggled all my life with eating disorders & then addiction. Dr Berjat was the first doctor who showed me genuine compassion & respect, even with my issues. She researched for me, & found me other professionals to help me on my way to recovery... Thanks to her, I am now free from those things that kept me bound. It was a 30+ year struggle, & I found a heart of gold in Dr Berjat. After meeting so many doctors who did NOT treat me with kindness or have any hope for me, Dr Berjat was a surprising breath of fresh air. I sensed a deepness in her, otherwise I know I would not have felt safe to confide my own struggles. I only wish I was emotionally available at the time, to also be a friend in return. Thank you Dr B...I know you are in heaven. You are a treasure.
Paul v Nguyen:
Such wonderful lady, I remember. All my thoughts to you, Michel, during these difficult times. I share your pain.
Raila Dollevoet:
I am so sorry for your great loss Eric and family. I felt so lucky to meet Vanessa and have her as my family doctor and friend. She was such a compassionate and caring human being. She took such good care of me when I had difficulties with my pregnancies. She was able to say just the right things and hold my hand and give me a hug exactly the right time.

I wish I could have been a better friend to you Vanessa and carried some of your burdens as you did mine. I wish we would have gone for more walks and coffee, since every time I was with you I felt your goodness and warmth and you were able to uplift me.
Bardaud jean marie:
nous t'avons peu connu mais nous t'avions appréciée.
Nous présentons nos sincères condoléances à ton père et à Eric.
Repose en paix
Maryon Siemens:
Eric and family;

I will always remember Vanessa's quick smile and the light she passed to others with her presence. When we hiked in the mountain's together she always had so much appreciation for nature and I loved how she kept Eric "in line" with her gentle reminders. Her tender care of Yoda was heart warming and showed her kindness to all living creatures. I will miss her dearly....
Nigel Mathews:
Now that the stardust has gone from your eye
Who are we to sit and wonder why
You spent time amongst us as well you might
Now you've gone, a new star in the night.

The twinkle has so recently dimmed
Did you leave us on a sudden whim
I can remember you as if you were here
So lovely, so gentle, with nothing to fear.

I recall the time we first met
It was in the clinic in Lillooet
You were telling me how things should be done
I didn't argue, clearly you'd won

Oh Vanessa! We miss you so
We still wonder why you had to go
Wherever you are we hope you know
We're thinking of you. Quietly the river flows.

Jane Robes:

My deepest sympathies to Dr. Berjat's family. I so appreciated her caring attitude, she was a wonderful family doctor to myself and my teenage daughters. Her beautiful and kind spirit will always be remembered.
Melody Ko:
I met Vanessa when we were both students at McGill and we both wrote for McGill's Office for Science and Society. Though I did not get to know Vanessa well, I remember her as kind, gentle, soft-spoken, polite and earnest. As a physician who's had to battle with depression on and off myself, it absolutely pains me that Vanessa saw leaving this world as the only solution to her suffering.
The obituary is beautiful, and I am not at all surprised to read that Vanessa was such a dedicated doctor and loving person.
My condolences to Vanessa's family and friends.
Goodbye Vanessa, may you rest in peace.

Bobbie jo :

To you Vanessa, aka "Tiger." So visibly calm, even while your storms raged. So passionate even in your shy demeanor. So tender with the bruised and broken of this world. So desirous of the good. Thank you for giving us what you could. Forgive us for our failings and our inadequacy. We entrust you to God and eternity.

To you, Eric. You have had the blessing of knowing Vanessa the best and longest. Count those blessings over the days, weeks and months to come. Continue to count them over the years and decades. It will bring smiles and tears. You will need both in equal measure. Please know that you are part of our memories of Vanessa, and we will be thinking a lot about you, too. And praying for your comfort.
Bret Batchelor:
Vanessa will be sorely missed by all of us in the medical community. She was very dedicated to her craft and was a wonderful person to work with. She was always very calm, calculated and focused. She contributed a massive amount to rural surgery and obstetrics in Canada and I'm so sad that we won't have her voice in our corner going forward. Moreover, she was just such a pleasant person to be around. I always looked forward to her smiling face at our conferences and meetings. Our deepest condolences go out to her family and loved ones during this time of such great sadness and loss.
Pierre et Suzanne Lundahl:

Penny and Doug Butler:
Our hearts are grieved with the loss of Vanessa. We pray that the Lord’s incrediable comfort will sustain you through the days ahead. We consider our lives blessed to know her and enjoy her company over the last number of years - I, Penny, remember a wonderful breakfast conversation the morning after Jesse/Ava’s wedding and Doug enjoyed the ever fun New Years’s Mexican Train battle. A beautiful lady inside and out. We will miss her.
Vikki Vogt Haines:
Eric, Michel, Maria and family - I am at a loss to express my disbelief and sadness. Vanessa's sweet, warm smile and gentle, earnest spirit have been a constant in our academic circles the past 9 years that I have known her. She trained a year after I did in Prince Albert, SK, and has been a fixture of our small, close knit Canadian community of rural FPs with Enhanced Surgical Skills. We've shared hotel rooms, ski days, tips and hints of medical practice, national curriculum work and ESS advocacy, the joys and struggles of the craft. I did not know she was suffering as deeply she must have been. Her loss has stunned her community of colleagues throughout western Canada. She was and remains highly regarded. She will be dearly missed. Russ and I are sorry we can't be with you on Monday and extend our love and condolences from Revelstoke.
Ruth Stock:

I have many fond memories of working with Dr. Berjat in the Rocky Mountain Hospital O.R. and found her to be a compassionate, diligent and exceptional physician. Eric and family, may the Lord surround you with his presence, love and compassion as you mourn and try to make sense of your loss. She will be remembered fondly.
Lillooet Hospital staff: :
We are saddened and sorry beyond belief in Lillooet to learn of the loss of Vanessa. She came to Lillooet and quickly became part of our team, our culture and our family. She brought with her – calmness, expertise and so much compassion for everything that she did. She had a passion for maternity, family centred care, equity and was a strong proponent of how to deliver socially accountable health care. With her enhanced surgical skills, she was a unique and treasured partner at our Site, bringing with her the important vision of childbirth in your own community.
Vanessa not only brought her expertise to the Hospital she was able to enjoy the outdoors – with hiking, skiing and a love of food and the company of co-workers. Her endless kindness touched many lives here both personally and professionally. Vanessa was a bright and beautiful person and we will miss her profoundly . We are grateful for the time that we had with Vanessa in Lillooet and will long remember the impact that she had on each of us. The world of medicine has lost a kind and gentle soul.
Our hearts go out to Eric and her family at this time. Please know that you and your family are in our thoughts and we will treasure the time that we had with Vanessa.

From the Lillooet Hospital and Health Centre Care team – nursing and physicians.
