Obituary

Irene Howard (nee Cliff)
Aug. 11, 1924 – Aug. 10, 2018
The family of Irene Howard (nee Cliff) sadly announces her passing. With her family by her side, she passed away Aug. 10, 2018 at the Clearwater Centre in Rocky Mountain House one day short of her 94th birthday.
Irene was born Aug. 11, 1924, on the family homestead in the Ricinus area to George and Ruth Cliff. Always a caregiver, Irene worked on the family farm caring for her siblings and her invalid mother. In addition, she helped in the family operated post office as her father’s “right hand man.” She left the farm at the age of 17 and worked as a housekeeper in Calgary then as a cook for logging camps closer to home. In 1942, she moved to Rocky where she worked for Dr. Greenaway’s family and at the Cony and Kilico stores.
While in Rocky, Irene met Dick Howard. They fell in love and were married 55 years until his death in 2002. They raised their six children in the home they built in Rocky where Irene lived until 2016.
Friends and family alike always felt welcome in the Howard home and Irene loved to cook for them– there was always something delicious to eat and no one left hungry. In addition to cooking, her loves included sewing, gardening, picking berries, and especially children. Irene loved to be surrounded by children; there was always more room in her heart for a child.
Irene was committed to community involvement and volunteerism. She and Dick received the Rocky Community Builder award in 2002, recognizing their dedication to various organizations.
Irene was predeceased by her husband Richard (Dick); daughter Bev; parents George and Ruth Cliff; sisters Madge (Fred) Osterlund, Nellie Murphy and brothers Gerry and Art Cliff.
Left to mourn her passing are her children: Pat, Connie (Allan), Glenda, Rick (Tracey), Georgia, 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and good friends.
A celebration of life will be held at Memorial Presbyterian Church on Thursday, Aug. 16, 2018, at 11 am.
Donations may be made to the Clearwater Centre, the Rocky Health Centre or organization of choice in lieu of flowers.
