Evelyn Sylvia
With saddened hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Evy Humphrey at Clearwater Centre, Rocky Mountain House on June 7, 2018. Evy was born on February 11, 1919, the sixth child of Dick and Nina Hollingsworth at Buffalo Lake, AB. on Feb. 11, 1919. She contracted double pneumonia at two weeks old and nearly lost her life. Now, 99 years later we reflect on a life well lived. That spring of 1919 the family moved to Nugent, AB. which is now Hoadley, then briefly to Potter Creek before buying land in the Gimlet district 30 miles NE of Rocky. During the subsequent years until 1931 they moved a few times within the area before settling on the Moosehorn Ranch in the Aurora district. This is where Evy finished her grade schooling and also met her future lifemate, Alva Oren Humphrey. Evy and Alva were married at her sister’s home at Gimlet on Feb 21, 1940 and started their lifetime journey with various jobs in the area. In 1945 their only child Marilyn Ann was born in Eckville, AB. They settled in Rocky Mountain House, but three years later made a brief sojourn to Edmonton, AB where Alva completed a course in barbering and Evy took a course at the Modern School of Hairdressing. They were employed in their respective career choices until moving back to Rocky in 1958. Alva bought McCarrol’s barbershop and Evy went to work at Brownlie’s Drugstore. She clerked there for 38 years, the last ten years it being Guardian Drugs (for Norman Kwan). Over those years, Evy came to know numerous people and made many good friends. She would be remembered as being generous, friendly, kind, helpful and an avid bingo follower. For a number of years she would be a fixture in bingo halls in Condor, Dovercourt, Rocky, Red Deer and sometimes in between. She and Alva loved camping and often took their grandsons out for a fun weekend in the west country with some of their good camping friends as well. Sadly, Alva passed away in 1985. Evy remained in their home until latter 2014 when she made her new home at the Westview Lodge, Rocky Mountain House. In 2017 following a lengthy stay in the hospital she relocateded to the Clearwater Centre in Rocky to live out her days close to family and friends and under the kind and compassionate care of the Clearwater staff. Besides her husband Alva of 45 years, she was predeceased by her parents Dick and Nina Hollingsworth, six siblings and their spouses, True (Betty), Ellis (Jane), Stanley (Babe), Artie, Violet (Stanley Brown) and Anne [Babe] (Bud Murray). For 16 years Evy has remained the last of her immediate family. Evy leaves to mourn her loss, her daughter Marilyn and husband Joe Leavitt and their four boys, Rick (Kathleen), Shane (Janice), Cody (Pam) and Bernie, also their seven children, Evy’s great-grandchildren, Rylee and Chanelle (Travis), Tamara (Ryan) and Kayla (Chad) and Keanna, Kyra and Harley; one great, great grandson Kaide and a baby great great grand daughter Brynlee. She will also be sadly missed by numerous nieces and nephews in Alberta and the United States as she had taken on the role of ‘mother hen’ for the whole family.
Funeral services will be held from the Rocky Funeral Chapel on June 25, 2018 at 1:00 pm. Memorial donations may be made in Evy’s memory to the Good Samaritan Society Clearwater Centre: Memory Lane, Rocky Mountain House, AB.

Campbell Family:
My sincere sympathy to Marilyn, Joe and family. Sorry we didn't make it back to say our last good byes to an amazing lady. She become a grandmother to not just my husband and I , but my three kids. She will never be forgot by any of us. She was my lifesaver when Quinlin broke her leg, and David was in BC. Evie insisted that I leave my son with her, during the weekly cast changes( Quin was 2) and she could not use crotches. Davin enjoyed the visit and sometimes if it took a little longer, she make sure that she caught Olivia before she got home. Thanks to Evie my kids learned that older people can be really cool. I am glad I got to share 8 years with this lady. I will be eternally grateful for all that she taught me. Thanks Marilyn for letting us share your amazing Mom, she was one of the best ladies i ever meet and we will miss her forever.
Stacey Jarvin:
I am sad to hear of Evy's passing. She was my mother's best friend for many years, and I remember her fondly. My condolences.
Lynda Currie:
I have also known Evvie all of my life. She attended Gimlet Schhol with my aunts Lucille Lemieux, Loretta Aske and my mother Ileene Hulberg. She had such a great memory and had wonderful stories of earlier times. I know she was very fond of my grandmother Minnie Nugent. She once told me she cried when she was not allowed to stop at Grandma’s on the way home from school. She was a good friend and I will miss her. Condolences to Marilyn, Joe and the entire family.
Dennis Bednarz:
