On September 16th Bernard (Bernie) Ashley Butterwick passed away peacefully in his sleep at Park Avenue retirement home at the age of 90 yrs. He was born in Calgary Ab., on Sept. 7, 1927 & grew up in Nemiscam, Ab. After leaving school & a short stint in the Canadian Army during WW11 he settled in Carmangay where he met & married the love of his life, Vivian, in 1950. Working for the Ab. Wheat Pool, took him to Chin, Barons, & Coaldale Ab. He left the Wheat Pool & went to work for the Ab. Govt. in 1960 which brought him to Rocky Mtn. House. In 1963 he started & owned & operated Butterwick Farm & Ranch Supplies until a fire completely destroyed it in 1971. After short stints in Princess & Drayton Valley with Ab. Gas Trunk Line he ended up in Calgary with the Western Stock Growers as Manager for 11 years. He retired back to Rocky Mtn. House in 1988.
Bernie was a man of many talents but none more so than his woodworking shop where he spent hour upon hour building, fixing or manufacturing something out of wood or steel. He also had a great passion for trains & steam engines. In his later years wrote a book of his memoirs as well as helped good friend Milt Ward write his memoirs. But no greater passion than his family, kids & grandchildren. Very community minded & served on R. M. H. School Board, Rocky Town Council, Pres. of Rocky Rams Hockey Club & very active in the Royal Canadian Legion serving as President for many years as well as Zone Commander & received a life membership. Stewart Stephanson:
Condolences to Vivian and all the Butterwick family. He was not a guy you would ever forget if you met and got to know him. Until they moved recently, we lived a couple of doors down from this fine couple for five years. I had many little visits with Bernie, often at the community mail box. You had to always be aware
of the next zinger he would shoot your way, they were always a hoot! My first memories of Bernie go back to 1968, when I made monthly visits to check the natural gas meter at the Farm and Ranch supply he owned and operated. I usually had a brief exchange with him,and he was always covered in grain dust and I would itch all over! After Butterwicks returned to Rocky for retirement, they lived in numerous locations in town, I asked him one day on the street, where are you two living now? I've lost track! He just grinned and said, Stew, we find it easier too move, than clean the house were living in! That was just one of many quips over the years! I always appreciated Bernie's desire to be involved in the community, he certainly did his part.
Vi Chilton- DeMers:
