Obituary

Leny (Lena) Askes
July 10, 1950 – January 16, 2018

With God’s grace and love we announce the passing of our dear wife, mother, and Granny. After her final battle with cancer, Leny went to be with her Lord and Saviour on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at the age of 67.

Leny was born on July 10, 1950 to Anthonie and Anna Blaak in Dubbeldam ZH Nederland.

Leny immigrated to Canada with her family when she was 9 years old and they later settled on a farm North of Rocky Mountain House. Leny worked for over 8 years at Deerhome (Michener Center) in Red Deer before marrying Henry Askes on May 13, 1978.

Within 6 years they added 4 children to their family. Leny and Henry raised their children with love and encouragement on the family farm. In later years she loved spending time with her grandchildren, giving them lots of hugs and taking them for ice cream.

Leny enjoyed volunteering at her church and the Christian School. Some of her hobbies included sewing, knitting, scrapbooking and quilting.
After battling and beating 2 bouts of cancer, life took on a whole new purpose. She made numerous quilts for other cancer patients so that they could be warm during their treatments.

She will be lovingly remembered by Henry, her husband of almost 40 years, her children Sandra (Karl) Gerdung , Miranda (Bryan) Strydhorst, Randy (Colleen) Askes, and Nicole Askes, eight grandchildren: Levi, Kallie and Luke Gerdung, Mickey, Stuart and Kirsten Strydhorst, and Hayden and Griffin Askes; brother Adrian (Tammy) Blaak, and sister Sylvia (Kendal) Quast, sisters-in-law Anne Ingram and Wilma Askes as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Leny was predeceased by her parents Anthonie and Anna Blaak, brother Gerrit Blaak father-in-law Jacob Askes and brother-in-law Bob Ingram.

A memorial service for Leny will be held at the First Christian Reformed Church in Rocky Mountain House on Friday Jan 26, 2018 at 1:00 pm.

Donations may be made in Leny’s name to a charity of your choice.

Condolences

Marjorie Bauer ( former neighbor):
Henry,
Just over a year has passed since I lost my Kurt. I know and understand your pain as do all who have lost a loved one. You will meet again in a place where there is no pain or suffering and that knowledge is like a shining light that shows the way home. Find comfort in family and friends, Henry, they are your true, willing and constant support.
In sympathy.....Marjorie
Donna Hunley:
So sorry to hear of your loss. Always enjoyed our basketball games together. May God be with all of you during this trying time
Colleen True:
Lenny was a valuable member of our cancer quilting group" Hearts Sew Giving". We will miss her laugh and smile. She said that her treat on our quilting day was a sub bought at Subway. She always had one. My condolences to her husband and family.
Spike and Jennie Bakker:
Sending you much love and blessings as you go through this difficult journey.May God comfort you and surround you with His peace and may you cherish the many special memories of a dear wife, mother and grandmother. Leny touched so many of us with her cheerful and smiley face, we will also never forget her wonderful laugh. Many hugs to all of you from your Ontario cousins.
Dirma Roseboom :
I probably bumped into Henry and Leny about a month ago at Costco after not having seen them for a while. Always kind- it was good to see them. Praying you will all be comforted by our heavenly Father who hears and sees and understands the loss and pain you are feeling. When my dad passed away I felt that heaven became so much more real to me. I had to explain to my children that Jesus went ahead to prepare a room for my dad. He has also prepared a place for your mom/wife/grandmother/friend.
Rick and Connie Kwantes:
Sorry to hear about your loss Henry. Our thoughts are with you and your family at this time.
Myrna Knull:

Lisa Duffin:
