Obituary

Imbery, Ralph George
1934-2019

God called the soul of Ralph George Imbery home on June 28, 2019 at the age of 84 years. Ralph was born to George and Helena Imbery on a farm near Estevan, Saskatchewan on October 11, 1934 during the “Dirty Thirties”. Due to a sandstorm, he was born at home. He was the 7th of 12 children, 2 of which died in infancy.
Ralph’s dad was a horse trader and Ralph survived many a dangerous experiences handling the horses which his dad bought from the government pastures which had been abandoned due to the event of the tractor. As a child he was nicknamed “Happy”, a name that suited him, since he was well known by his cheerful and playful comments to all that knew him. At 16 or 17 he got his first job working for John Deere in Regina, but he moved to Calgary after he had come to Banff on a holiday. He worked for Huttons, then to the Aluminum Plant at Kitimat, B.C. Later he returned to Calgary and took a job at U.F.A. where he worked his way up to manager. He married Margaret McKervey and they were soon blessed with two boys, George in 1971 and R. James in 1972. When his father died, Ralph inherited a quarter of land on the outskirts of Strathmore. Ralph decided he would rather be a farmer than a manager. So he quit the UFA and sold the Strathmore land and moved to a farm near the Evergreen store. There he went to cattle farming and two more children were born; Mary Jo in 1974 and Thomas in 1976. When high prices were offered for the land, Ralph sold out, the family moved to a quarter of land that Margaret had inherited north of Rocky and also bought an adjoining quarter. Two more children were added Bart in 1978 and Barbara in 1980. Since the land was tree covered, it had to be cleared, and a homestead built. Ralph then became a dealer under the name of Rimco for Butler, and sold grain bins. He also teamed up with Gerry Hillier and sod and constructed farm buildings. When his health began to deteriorate and he had a mild heart attack he sold the business but went more into farming. He enjoyed acting with the Frisco Players, after one of these plays he came home to find a cow that was having difficulties calving and while working with the cow he has a serious heart attack. Years later he had further problems with his hear but in the end it was not his heart that failed.
Ralph is survived by his wife Margaret, his children: George, James, Mary Jo (Tom) Miller, Tom (Melissa), Bart (Maria) and Barbara (Gerald) Heaton; his siblings: Agnes (Paul) Wollbaum, Veronica Hoeg, Edward Imbery and Donald (Audrey) Imbery; 34 grandchildren and innumerable nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and infant brother and sister; his siblings: Joseph (lily), Margaret (Ernie) Pietch, Annabelle (Ev) Stevens, Elizabeth (Stan) Godon and Helen Conway and sister-in-law Patsy Imbery.
