Obituary

Sandstra, Jannel Courtney
1983-2017

Jannel Courtney Sandstra unexpectedly found her way into the arms of her Lord and Savior on December 7, 2017. Jannel was born in Red Deer, Alberta on July 18, 1983 at 5 Lbs. 10 Ounces and although tiny, she immediately exhibited the strength and perseverance that were the hallmark of her life’s journey. Jannel was full of life, had a smile as big as the sky and an attitude that filled a room. Bugaboo, as she was fondly known by her family, was fiercely determined and loyal. That determination ultimately led her to becoming a nationally acclaimed commercial underwriter that took her across the country.
Jannel took her education at Rocky Christian School, Will Sinclair High School, Mount Royal College and eventually Trinity Western University in B.C. Her career took her to live in Calgary and Vancouver. In each of the places that Jannel lived, she made friends easily. Her joy came from spending time with friends and family.
As much as Jannel was outgoing, funny and loving, she struggled for years with undiagnosed depression and anxiety, in her journey to stop the pain she gradually turned to alcohol. Although it seemed to help at first, this dark friend eventually stole Jannel’s life bit by bit until it became a journey of pain and chaos. In January 2015, Jannel moved back to Alberta where over the past 3 years she tried to regain her life with the support of her family, friends and professionals. The need to stop her pain became the focus of her day, and alcohol had its grip on her so strongly, that even family, friends and love could not break that grip. On December 7th, her fight came to an end and she is now at rest in the arms of her Heavenly Father surrounded by her loved one who went before her.
Jannel was predeceased by her maternal grandparents, Ann and Doeke Wadman and her paternal grandmother, Grace Sandstra and her special pet Murphy. She is survived by her loving and proud parents Ernie and Jeannette Sandstra, her brother and “Buddie” Jonathan Sandstra and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins as well as her loving godparents Karen and Doug Daisley. Jannel’s special friends spread across the globe, from Alhambra, Rocky, Ontario, British Columbia, England and Australia, she had a huge personality that lit up the world and now her light shines in Heaven.
A Memorial Service for Jannel will be held at the First Christian Reformed Church on Friday, December 15, 2017 at 1:30 PM. A private interment, for invited family and friends, will take place at the Horseguard Community Cemetery on Friday, December 15, 2017.

As an expression of sympathy memorial donations in Jannel’s name may be made to the Shalom Counselling Service, 5515 – 27 Ave, Red Deer, AB T4P 0E5 or Country Counselling Services, Box 1388, Camrose, Alberta T4V 1X3.

Condolences

Pam Wright and Bill Snyder:
We are so sorry for the tragic loss of your beautiful daughter Janell. I remember taking care of her as a ‘back-up’ babysitter when she was just a little girl. She brought light and laughter into our home on those days. During times of loss, we find ourselves troubled by things we don’t understand. There are no answers to comfort your grief, only lasting love and precious memories. Bill and I are thinking of you at this sad time.
Sam Millar:
Jannel was such a beautiful soul. She will be missed by many... Rest easy my friend.
Philip Stel:
Ernie, Jeannette & Jonathan (and the rest of your family, and church family): I just received the news from Lauralee a few minutes ago of Jannel's death. I am so sorry. My heart breaks for you all. I pray that the comfort in Jesus is real, and that, in and through your tears, you will experience the deep peace and hope that only Jesus can give. I'm praying for you.
Brenda Brown:
I wanted to express my heartfelt sympathy , as you grieve the loss of your beautiful Janelle. I was her high school librarian, and it broke my heart to hear of how she had suffered. I remember her as sweet, and kind to others. May her gentle spirit live on in the lives of those whose life she touched.
Garret and Wendy Brouwer:
Dear Jeannette and Ernie,

Jannel, daughter ,sister ,cousin, grand daughter, friend, but above all a child of God...valued deeply, and loved unconditionally by her Creator. Our prayers continue for you as you journey through your grief for your daughter Jannel.
Joy Teghtmeyer:
My thoughts are with you Jeanette at this very difficult time. We would do almost anything if we thought it would lessen your burden and pain. This is so senseless. How does one go on when one of your most precious gifts has been taken far to young. If I can help in any way I am here for you.
" You can shed tears that she is gone,
Or you can smile because she lived,
You can close your eyes and pray that she will come back,
Or you can open your eyes and see all that she has left.
Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her
or you can be full of the love that you shared,
you can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday,
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember her and only that she is gone
or you can cherish her memory and let it live on,
You can cry and close your mind, be empty and
turn your back,
or you can do what she would want:
Smile, open your eyes, love and go on."

We are so sorry to hear of the tragedy your family is living through. The loss of a child who brought both much joy and, at times, such sadness into our lives is devastating. My heart breaks all over again with yours and I can only pray that our dear Lords arms of comfort will carry you through. Jannel will be greatly missed just as she was greatly loved. Your lives will never be the same but lean on FAITH, FAMILY and FRIENDS as you travel the path of grief. Our Lord is faithful and will bring you eventually to a place when you can remember Jannel with more smiles than tears. Praying for you; we know that Jannel was so loved by her Saviour, was close to His heart to the very end of her time on this earth and has found peace now in His eternal arms.
